COURSE DESCRIPTION
The use of oral antimicrobials for complicated infections has been gaining significant interest in recent years. One such clinical scenario where this practice has been increasingly evaluated is the treatment of infective endocarditis. The 2015 Infectious Diseases Society of American clinical practice guideline for the treatment of infective endocarditis make mention that oral antibiotic treatment may be considered in a few specific situations. Since that time, the literature on this topic has continued to evolve, but the practice remains a topic of great debate. This presentation will review the most recent literature regarding oral antibiotics in infective endocarditis with the goal of shedding light on if, when, and in what patient populations oral therapy should be considered.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Discuss current literature surrounding the use of oral antimicrobials in the treatment of IE
- Identify specific patient populations in whom it may be appropriate to consider oral therapy for the treatment of IE.
- Outline oral antimicrobial regimens which may be most appropriate for use in the treatment of IE
