COURSE DESCRIPTION

Liver failure, including acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure, is a substantial healthcare burden with mortality rates of up to 50%. Artificial liver dialysis has been implicated as a treatment modality for acute liver disease, in which, MARS ® (Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System) is the most commonly used system. However, the benefit of MARS ® for patients with liver failure has not been well proven and conflicting evidence exists. This presentation will review the role of artificial liver dialysis in acute liver failure, describe the mechanism and indication of MARS, and discuss possible pharmacokinetic changes to medications affected by MARS.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the pathophysiology of acute liver failure and indications for liver dialysis
  2. Describe the mechanism of MARS ® (Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System)
  3. Discuss pharmacokinetic changes of medication affected by MARS and clinically relevant implications
