COURSE DESCRIPTION
Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) describes the impairment of cognition, psychological health, and/or physicial function that remain in the wake of critical illness. Current reports indicate up to 40% of ICU survivors experience some degree of PICS symptoms, often manifesting in the form of muscle weakness or problems with balance, issues with thinking and memory, severe anxiety, depression, or nightmares, which persist beyond discharge from the acute care setting. Unfortunately, post-ICU impairments are often undiagnosed and inadequately treated. This presentation will review the evidence regarding management of ICU survivors and describe the experience of creating a multidisciplinary clinic practice to address this care gap.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the incidence and clinical manifestation of PICS
- Review literature examining the long term implications of critical illness.
- Discuss current strategies to address care gaps related to PICS symptom recognition and management
