COURSE DESCRIPTION
The use of probiotics has significantly increased the past 10 years; however, a lack of well-designed clinical trials to clearly assess efficacy and safety exists. The wide variety of probiotics available also calls into question if the benefits seen with one strain would be a class-effect that can be applied to other strains. While probiotics are generally regarded as safe, there is hesitation with using them in immunosuppressed populations due to lack of safety data. In this presentation, the speaker will identify the different strains of bacteria found in probiotics, discuss target populations for probiotic use, and describe the use of probiotics in immunocompromised patients.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Identify different strains of bacteria found in probiotics
- Discuss target populations for probiotic use
- Describe the use of probiotics in immunocompromised patients
