COURSE DESCRIPTION
Penicillin’s are the most widely reported drug allergy by patients. Unfortunately, reported antibiotic allergies have been shown to be associated with increased negative consequences such as antimicrobial resistance, length of stay, adverse events, Clostridium difficile infection, intensive care unit admission, death, and treatment cost. Actively de-labeling penicillin allergies is an impactful intervention in numerous different ways that many healthcare providers overlook. This presentation will review the background and direct consequences of penicillin allergies as well as identify strategies to combat the growing number of mislabeled penicillin allergies.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the background of penicillin allergies
- Discuss consequences associated with mislabeled penicillin allergies
- Identify strategies institutions can employ to combat the mislabeled penicillin allergies
