COURSE DESCRIPTION
FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is an emerging specification for information exchange. FHIR has accelerated the development of new tools that interact with electronic health record data. With the continued growth of artificial intelligence and advanced clinical decision support, clinicians and health-system informaticists alike have an important role in guiding and vetting these applications. Teams creating new FHIR applications likely will seek subject matter expertise from practicing clinicians. A working understanding of FHIR will be necessary for clinicians to effectively work with developers to optimize custom tools for patient care. This presentation will provide foundational information about the benefits, structure, and applications of FHIR.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Identify the advantages of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) over other methods of information exchange in healthcare
- Describe the core components of FHIR
- Explain the application of FHIR to medication management
