COURSE DESCRIPTION

Emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide, which is nearly identical to emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumurate, is an antiretroviral used in combination with other antivirals for the treatment of HIV-1. Emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide indications were expanded in October of 2019, through FDA approval as a first line agent for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Historically, emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumurate has been the drug of choice. This presentation will review the new recommendations regarding antiretroviral therapies in PrEP and discuss emerging evidence surrounding the use of an investigative long-acting injectable medication.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the pharmacologic profile of emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumurate to emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide
  • Describe potential candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis according to the Centers for Disease Control
  • Discuss emerging evidence for a long-acting injectable medication for pre-exposure prophylaxis
