COURSE DESCRIPTION

In 1995, the FDA approved tramadol for the indications of moderate to severe pain in adult populations in the United States. The drug was touted by its German manufacturer to provide opioid activity and carry a lower risk of abuse and dependence than other short-acting opioids. Utilization of tramadol has increased significantly with the increased awareness regarding long-term abuse risks of opioid therapy. This presentation will review information regarding the safety and efficacy of tramadol for the treatment of pain and evaluate the claim that tramadol carries a low abuse potential.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss evidence for efficacy of tramadol for indications of acute or chronic pain in adults
  2. Describe major safety and pharmacokinetic considerations for the utilization of tramadol
  3. Assess the current misuse and abuse potential of tramadol
