COURSE DESCRIPTION

Naloxone is a potentially lifesaving medication that can be easily administered to those who overdose on opioids. Join the next Primary Care Grand Rounds to hear from the Mayo Clinic Opioid Stewardship Program Subcommittee's guest, Bonnie Milas, M.D., a professor of clinical anesthesiology and critical care in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Halena Gazelka, M.D., chair of the Opioid Stewardship Program Subcommittee, and Benjamin Lai, M.B., B.Ch., BAO, a member of the Opioid Stewardship Program Subcommittee, will host the discussion.

Dr. Milas, driven by the tragic loss of her two sons to opioid overdoses, advocates for breaking the stigma of opioid use disorder and making naloxone readily available. She will share her message along with a recovering heroin user whose life was saved by naloxone.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • explain how a live saving treatment can be used to treat opioid overdose.
  • describe how to advocate for breaking the stigma and making the drug more readily available.
