COURSE DESCRIPTION

Historically, aspirin has been a cornerstone agent for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, although recent evidence has highlighted that perhaps aspirin has less utility in primary prevention than once thought. However, there remains a lack of current literature on the long-term use of aspirin for secondary prevention. This presentation will focus specifically on long-term antiplatelet use for secondary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients who are also receiving anticoagulation treatment for atrial fibrillation. While various guidelines make recommendations for antiplatelet discontinuation, there is a gap in evidence and clinical practice often varies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the guideline recommendations for duration of antiplatelet therapy in acute coronary syndrome in patients using anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation
  • Review recent literature examining antiplatelet therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease
  • Discuss the balance of risks and benefits of antiplatelet and anticoagulant agents in these patients
