The Future of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Paramjit Toor Joshi, M.D.

Introduction

Paramjit T. Joshi, M.D. is the Distinguished Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at the Children’s National Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences & Pediatrics, at the George Washington University School of Medicine since September 1999. After graduating from the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana India, she trained and practiced as a pediatrician. After moving to the United States, she completed her training in general and child and adolescent psychiatry at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she remained on the faculty for over two decades.

She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and inducted into the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP). She has held several national offices at the AACAP, SPCAP and the ABPN – notably President of the Society of Professors of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (2006-2008), President of AACAP (2013-2015) and currently a Director on the Board of the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (2013-2020).

Dr. Joshi is the recipient of several awards - notably the APA’s Bruno Lima award for outstanding contributions in the care and understanding of disaster psychiatry; The Special Presidential Commendation Award by the APA in recognition of her commitment to quality clinical care, training and research in Child Psychiatry (2013). The (2014) Agnes Purcell McGavin award for a distinguished career in child and adolescent psychiatry by the APA and the 2015 IAPA’s (Indo-American Psychiatric Association) Academician award. She has taught and published extensively on the issues of depression, bipolar disorder, global mental health and childhood trauma.
