1st Speaker - Chris Takala, DO - Integrated Behavioral Care with Children and Adolescents: What do we know?

Dr. Takala pursued undergraduate studies in Psychology and Music Performance at University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004.  He later attended Midwestern University-Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he obtained the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011.  Dr. Takala completed residency training in Psychiatry at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in 2014 and is currently in his final year of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training, serving as a Chief Resident. On completion of training, Dr. Takala will join the faculty within the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI.  Dr. Takala’s research interests have been broad during his tenure. Under the mentorship of Drs. Palmer, Sim, and Sola, Dr. Takala has presented research findings at several national conferences, including the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Learning Objectives

  1. Familiarize clinicians with the current evidence base regarding the benefits of integrated behavioral health care versus usual care
  2. Summarize preliminary exploratory findings of research of the Early Management and Evidence-Based Recognition of Adolescents Living with Depression (EMERALD)

2nd Speaker - Ashley Junghans-Rutelonis, PhD - Physical Activity, Sleep and Chronic Pain: Feasibility of Using Fitbit Devices with Adolescents in a Pain Rehabilitation Center 

Ashley Junghans-Rutelonis, Ph.D. is a Pediatric Psychology Fellow in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. She completed her doctoral degree in Child Clinical Psychology from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her research interests include pediatric adjustment to and functioning with chronic illness. She is particularly interested in improving engagement in functional activities among youth with chronic pain. Dr. Junghans-Rutelonis has presented at national and international conferences, published in peer reviewed journals, and currently serves as the student Co-Chair of the Society of Pediatric Psychology Pain Special Interest Group.

Learning Objectives

  1. List physiological concerns related to adolescents with chronic pain
  2. Describe the methodology used to initiate a feasibility study
  3. Explain preliminary findings related to sleep and physical activity change among youth in a pain rehabilitation program
