1st PRESENTER: Julia Craner, Ph.D.
TITLE:  Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care: Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) Outcomes
Julia Craner is a second-year Clinical Health Psychology Fellow and Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and went on to obtain her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Maine. She has accepted position at Spectrum Health Medical Group in Grand Rapids, MI to begin after she completes her fellowship this year. Her primary clinical focus is the management of anxiety, mood, and behavioral health concerns in primary care and other medical settings. Research interests include the interaction of biopsychosocial contributions to health, particularly the manner in which individuals interpret and respond to physical and emotional changes. She has presented her research at national and international conferences, and has published in several peer-reviewed journals.

2.       Identify evidence-based behavioral approaches for treatment of anxiety disorders

3.       Evaluate outcomes of brief psychotherapy services offered in primary care


2nd PRESENTER: Jacquetta Blacker, B.M.B.Ch.
TITLE: Epigenetic regulation of metabotropic glutamate receptors in bipolar disorder
Dr. Blacker earned her medical degree from the University of Oxford while also obtaining a BA and MA in Physiological Sciences. She researched in vitro models of sepsis at Dr. Richard Boyd’s laboratory in the Human Anatomy Department at Oxford. She worked as an anatomy teacher at the University of Cambridge and a surgical trainee in the United Kingdom before returning to the US.  She is in her final year of the residency program of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic, where she is currently Chief Resident and is a member of the research track.  Her research mentor within the research track program is Dr. Marin Veldic and they have been examining epigenetic modifications of metabotropic glutamate receptors (particularly mGlu2 and mGlu3) in mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder.  Her additional interests include chronic mood and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents, particularly in surgical subpopulations. She has presented research findings at several national and international conferences. She will be starting Child and Adolescent fellowship next year.

1.    Review the field of epigenetics and the molecular mechanisms involved

2.    Appreciate the applications of epigenetic research to psychiatric conditions

3.    Recognize the current state of knowledge of epigenetic regulation of metabotropic glutamate receptors in bipolar disorder
