Bipolar Disorders and Cardiovascular Risk: A Cardiologist's Perspective with a Psychiatry Twist
Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D.
Introduction
Dr. Lopez-Jimenez is a Professor of Medicine at Mayo College of Medicine, the chair of the Division of Preventive Cardiology and the Director of Research at the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center at Mayo. He led the Consensus Statement in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention for the Inter-American Society of Cardiology and the South American Society of Cardiology. He is also the Chair of the International Committee for the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Dr. Lopez-Jimenez did his cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He trained in preventive cardiology at the VA Boston Healthcare System and Harvard Medical School and holds a Master’s of Science from Harvard School of Public Health. He has published more than 200 scientific publications, including invited editorials in journals like Lancet, and his scientific work has been cited more than 4000 times. He is a member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Cardiology, the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention, the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, Archives of Cardiology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has been frequently featured by the national media, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, CNN and NBC, and has been a guest speaker at National Public Radio on his work on normal weight obesity and other studies challenging the clinical utility of BMI and supporting the use of alternative measures of body adiposity.
