You Want Freud with That?  The Added Value of Combining Psychotherapy with Medication for Depression

Boadie Dunlop, M.D., M.S.

Introduction
Dr. Boadie Dunlop is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and has served as Director of the Emory University Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program for 11 years. He also directs the mood and anxiety disorders didactic module for Emory Psychiatry residents and supervises the resident psychopharmacology clinic at Emory. Dr. Dunlop served as the principal or co-investigator on over 60 NIH- and industry-sponsored clinical trials of medication, psychotherapy, or complementary medicine treatments for mood and anxiety disorders. He is particularly interested in identifying biological and clinical predictors of response to differing treatment approaches for anxiety and mood disorders, and in extending this knowledge into the broader clinical community.  He is currently collaborating with Mayo investigators Mark Frye, MD and Dick Weinshilboum, MD, on an NIH grant investigating the metabolomic and genetic predictors of outcomes to treatment with escitalopram, duloxetine and cognitive behavioral therapy in adults with depression.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the impact on outcomes of combination treatment with psychotherapy and medication versus either component alone among adults with major depressive disorder.
  2. Identify the limitations of the published literature on combination treatments that may limit generalizability to routine clinical practice.
