Realizing the Potential of Diversity for Mayo Clinic: Innovation, Inclusion and Health Equity
Sharonne N. Hayes, M.D.
Introduction
Dr. Sharonne Hayes is Professor of Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she founded and maintains an active clinical practice in the Women’s Heart Clinic and serves as Mayo Clinic’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion. With leadership she sets strategy for D & I activities across Mayo Clinic and develops solutions for equity in patient care and the workforce. Under her leadership, supplier diversity has been reinvigorated and Mayo Clinic has been recognized for its diversity and inclusion efforts, including 6 consecutive years on DiversityInc’s list of Top Healthcare Organizations.
In addition to a busy clinical practice, she has developed programs to assess and mitigate unconscious bias in healthcare and has published her work on efforts to enhance the professional and personal development and mentorship of women physicians and scientists.
Her research interests include sex and gender-based cardiology, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), diversity and health equity and the optimal role of social media in medicine and research.
Dr. Hayes is a nationally recognized speaker on diversity, women’s health and cardiovascular issues and has been involved in developing educational programs on professional development, women’s health and health equity topics for both medical professionals and the public, including NHLBI’s Heart Truth (“Red Dress”) campaign. She is a frequent guest in the media including the Today Show, Good Morning America, Charlie Rose Show, and Dr. Oz Show and serves on the advisory board for Woman’s Day and Diabetic Living magazines.
Her energy and expertise on behalf of women with heart disease has produced a broad range of accomplishments, including helping to develop the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Heart Truth (“Red Dress”) campaign, co-producing the Emmy-nominated PBS show Call to Action: Women and Heart Disease, and being awarded the Women’s Day Magazine “Red Dress Award”.
Dr. Hayes received her medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and pursued fellowships in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Research, and Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic Rochester
She is married to David, also a cardiologist, mother to Sarah and Drew, and active on social media for both personal and professional purposes
