1st PRESENTER: Akuh Adaji, M.B.B.S., Ph.D.
TITLE:  The Impact of Collaborative Care on Absenteeism in Depressed Employees Seen in Primary Practices
Akuh Adaji is currently a fourth-year psychiatry resident at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. He has interest in promoting integrated care approaches in primary care settings with goals of improving population health, patient and professional experiences and reducing overall costs. He obtained his medical degree from University of Ibadan, Nigeria and MSc in Organizational Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. He then completed his PhD from Monash University, Australia focusing on the implementation of eHealth/telemedicine for chronic disease management in primary care settings.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the cost of depression in terms of the impact on work.

  2. Describe what intervention models are known for depressed employees.

  3. Explain why primary care may be an ideal place to develop an intervention for depression.

  4. Describe the components of collaborative care for depression management in primary care.  Compare the impact of collaborative care and usual care on disability related absences in depressed employees in primary care.


2nd PRESENTER: Amy Stark, M.D.
Dazed and Confused:  A Closer Look at the Hazy Area of Cannabis Use Disorder and Renal Transplantation
Amy Stark is a fourth year psychiatry resident at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she is currently serving as Chief Resident.  Upon completion of her general residency she will become an addiction psychiatry fellow Yale University.  She is passionate about providing excellent care to her patients and fostering hope for recovery, wellness and thriving through all the stages of sobriety. Dr. Stark hails from the great state of Texas where she completed both her undergraduate and medical education at Texas Tech University. 

    Learning Objectives

    1. Recognize the scope of the medical challenge facing transplant psychiatrists and teams with regard to evaluating patients with substance use disorders - particularly cannabis use disorder.

    2. Identify the ethical and legal issues that complicate current protocols that assess for transplant candidacy when substance use disorders are present.

    3. Begin to evaluate ways to reframe our evaluation of substance use disorder patients into more rational protocols.
