1st PRESENTER: Blaine A. Minton, D.O.
TITLE:  Medical Cannabis in Minnesota:  puff, puff, pass (to psychiatry)
Blaine A. Minton, D.O. earned his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and is currently completing his fourth year of residency in General Adult Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Upon completion of residency in July 2017, Dr. Minton will be working with PrairieCare Medical Group in the Twin Cities. His primary focus will be in both outpatient and intensive outpatient settings, treating a patient panel ranging the full spectrum of adult psychiatric pathology.

  1. Identify factors that predispose patients to relapse into substance use after chemical dependency treatment.

2nd PRESENTER: Kendra J. Homan, Ph.D.
TITLE:  Primary Care assessment and Triage of Adolescent Patients with Anorexia Nervosa
Kendra J. Homan, Ph.D. is currently completing her two-year Medical Psychology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in the specialty area of Clinical Child Psychology. She earned her doctorate degree in Combined Clinical/Counseling/School Psychology from Utah State University in 2015 and completed her internship at the University of North Carolina Charlotte Counseling Center. Clinically, the bulk of Dr. Homan’s work has been with adolescents and young adults, with a specialization in child and adolescent eating disorders and adolescents with chronic pain and comorbid eating disorders. Dr. Homan’s research agenda focuses on improved detection and prevention of adolescent eating disorders in primary care, group family-based treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa, and the impact of disordered eating on outcome among adolescents with chronic pain attending a pain rehabilitation program. She has published 13 peer reviewed articles and has presented at numerous national and international meetings.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Identify how eating and weight concerns are addressed in a primary care context.

    2. Describe the extent to which medical guidelines for the assessment and hospitalization of anorexia nervosa are followed.

    3. Recognize what factors in primary care are associated with appropriate referrals for eating issues.
