TITLE:  Neurocognition in Major Psychiatric Disorders:  Predictors and Clinical Implications

Dr. Katherine E. Burdick is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Mood and Psychosis Research Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Harvard Medical School. She has expertise in clinical and neurocognitive assessment across a range of patients with psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Dr. Burdick holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology from the City University of New York-The Graduate Center. She completed her clinical internship and her postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and is licensed in the state of New York.

Dr. Burdick’s primary research focus is on identifying persistent cognitive deficits in major psychiatric disorders, understanding their etiologies, and directly targeting them with treatment. She has received substantial grant support for this work from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Office of Veteran’s Affairs, and private foundations.

Learning Objectives

  1. Characterize the cognitive profile common to bipolar disorder and compare it with that seen in schizophrenia
  2. Identify the clinical correlates and biomarkers of cognitive impairment in bipolar patients.
  3. Describe the cognitive trajectoy in bipolar disorder including both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative processes.
