Introduction

1st Speaker

Dr. Janette Leal, MD is currently a part time Geriatric Psychiatry fellow and part time psychiatry consultant. She obtained her medical degree at Saint James School of Medicine in the Netherland Antilles and completed and combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency at the University of Iowa. She has become particularly passionate about Geriatric psychiatry and looks forward to the rest of her career.

2nd Speaker

Dr. Michele Tsai Owens is a second-year Clinical Child/Pediatric Psychology Fellow at Mayo Clinic. She received her B.A. degrees in Psychology and Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas and completed a Pre-doctoral Pediatric Psychology Internship at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Dr. Tsai Owens’ clinical and research interests include pediatric patients’ adaptation to and management of chronic medical conditions.

1st Speaker

  1. Identify signs of early agitation.
  2. Identify non-pharmacological alternatives of treatment.
  3. Identify risk of medication use for behavioral decontrol in the elderly.

2nd Speaker

  1. Describe the prevalence of subjectively experienced neurocognitive difficulties among pediatric patients with POTS.
  2. Describe the prevalence of weaknesses in attention/working memory and memory among these patients.
  3. Recognize relative contributions of POTS symptoms, co-occurring pain, and affective symptoms to neurocognitive functioning among these patients.
