Social Media, Social Brains:  Adolescent Development in a Digital Context

Lauren Sherman, Ph.D.

Introduction

Lauren Sherman is a quantitative and qualitative researcher who studies social media use in adolescence and across the lifespan. Her research investigates the role of new media and digital communication in shaping socioemotional development, particularly during the adolescent years.

Dr. Sherman is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Temple University and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Haverford College. She earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at UCLA where she conducted what is believed to be the first study of brain responses during social media use in adolescence. She graduated with honors from Vassar College with a BA in Psychology and Music. At Vassar, she conducted research in social and developmental psychology and trained as an opera singer.

Dr. Sherman’s research has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Economist, and on NPR’s Morning Edition, and published in the journals Psychological Science, Computers in Human Behavior, Developmental Psychology, and Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. In 2017, she was named a member of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Science for her work on social media and the brain.
