Using the PHQ-9 and other Measures to Improve Mental Health Outcomes

Kurt Kroenke, MD, MACP

Introduction
Kurt Kroenke, MD, MACP, is Chancellor’s Professor of Medicine at Indiana University, and a Research Scientist in the Regenstrief Institute and the VA Center for Health Information and Communication. Dr. Kroenke is a past President of the Society of General Internal Medicine and a past President of the Association for Clinical Research Training. His research focuses on physical and psychological symptoms and he has conducted more than a dozen clinical trials funded by the NIH, VA, and other sponsors, with a particular emphasis on pain and depression. These trials have used collaborative care models and more recently telecare interventions, and have included primary care patients as well as those cared for in oncology, neurology, and geriatric settings. He has developed the Patient Health Questionnaire scales (including the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and PHQ-15) which are widely-used for the detection and monitoring of common mental disorders. He has also developed the PEG pain scale recommended by the US Surgeon General, the P4 suicidality screener, and the REMIT scale for tracking depression remission. He has more than 360 peer-reviewed publications.

Learning Objectives

  1. Examine how the PHQ-9 can be used in clinical practice for evaluating and treating patients with mental disorders.
  2. Review companion scales for assessing anxiety, somatization, suicidal ideation, and other psychiatric conditions.
