Schema Therapy: An Overview of Theory and Practice

Introduction
Cesar Gonzalez, Ph.D., LP, ABPP, is certified as an advanced-level schema therapist by the International Society of Schema Therapy and is board certified as a clinical psychologist. He holds an academic-appointment as assistant professor of psychology and family medicine at Mayo Clinic and serves as an Associate Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program and Clinical Director of the Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic. His clinical practice includes the application of schema therapy among transgender and gender diverse individuals and focuses on decreasing internalized stigma that often results from social rejection, prejudice, and discrimination.

- Summarize the conceptual model and evidence-base of schmema therapy.
- Explain the differences between maladaptive cognitive schemas, coping response styles and modes and how they apply to the clinical interaction.
- Describe common cognitive, experiential, and behavioral pattern breaking strategies used in schema therapy.
