Cardiac Psychiatry:  Clinical Care and New Directions

Jeffrey Huffman, M.D.

 


Introduction

Dr. Huffman is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program in the MGH Division of Psychiatry and Medicine. As the director of the program, he serves as principal investigator for over 10 studies spanning psychiatry, psychology, health behavior, and cardiovascular disease, including studies funded by NIH, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association, with 2 current R01s and an R21. Members and trainees of the program have included cardiologists, diabetologists, eight research fellows, psychologist post-doctoral fellows, junior staff psychiatrists, senior psychiatry residents, research social workers, and Harvard medical students; he received the Outstanding Research Mentor award in the MGH Psychiatry Department in 2016. In his work at the interface of psychiatry and cardiology, Dr. Huffman has given Grand Rounds at sites nationwide, presented research at national and international meetings, and published over 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals with over 100 first- or senior-author publications.  He also serves as the Associate Chief for Clinical Services in the Department of Psychiatry at MGH and the Director of Inpatient Psychiatry Research at MGH. This inpatient research has focused on assessment and treatments related to suicide risk in acutely ill psychiatric patients.

  1. Outline the prevalence of depression among patients with acute and chronic heart disease.
  2. Describe effective and safe treatments for depression and anxiety disorders in patients with heart disease.
