Challenges in Perinatal Psychopharmacology

Katherine L. Wisner, M.D., M.S.


Introduction

Katherine L. Wisner obtained her M.S. in Nutrition and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University, followed by a categorical pediatric internship and general and child psychiatry residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.  She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health, a fellowship in Professional Ethics at Case Western Reserve University in 1996, and a certificate for the Physician Leadership and Management Program at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Wisner is board-certified in general and child and adolescent psychiatry. 

 

Dr. Wisner's main focus is research related to the psychiatric treatment of women of childbearing age. She is internationally recognized as an expert in the treatment of mood disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period.  She has been the principal investigator on multiple National Institute of Health- and foundation-funded research projects.  Dr. Wisner and colleagues Drs. Catherine Stika and Alfred George received funding from NICHD to participate in the Obstetric-Fetal Pharmacology Research Centers.  Her memberships in scientific societies include the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists, the Teratology Society, and the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.  Dr. Wisner is a past president of the Marcé International Society for Perinatal Mental Health.  She was a consultant for the U.S. CDC’s Treating for Two:  Safe Medication Use in Pregnancy; the FDA Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee on Perinatal Depression.  She has authored more than 225 peer-reviewed articles and 19 book chapters.  She received the Woman in Science Award from the American Medical Women’s Association in 2011 and the Alexandra Symonds Award from the American Psychiatric Association in 2012.  Dr. Wisner was awarded the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Institute for Clinical Research Education, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2012.  She received the Marcè International Society for Perinatal Mental Health’s Medal for lifetime contributions to the field of Perinatal Psychiatry, and is the inaugural president of the North American Society for Perinatal Mental Health.  Dr. Wisner serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.  She received the annual APA Award for Research at the meeting in May 2017. Dr. Wisner is in the Northwestern Public Voices Fellowship, which supports faculty to write op-eds that will enhance the impact of faculty research. 

 

Dr. Wisner is the founding president of the Perinatal Mental Health Association of North America, and she hosted a meeting in November 2017 that drew 425 registrants, a testimony to the public health significance of perinatal mental health!
