First Suicide Attempts in Youth
Alastair McKean
Introduction
Alastair McKean, MD is a consultant and assistant professor of psychiatry in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. His clinical focus is on developing telepsychiatry services for children and adolescents in primary care. Dr. McKean’s primary research interests center on better understanding the antecedents and outcomes of suicide attempts in youth and he is working on a number of studies involving the Rochester Epidemiology Project. He is active in education, being the Psychiatry Clerkship Director in the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine as well as the co-program site director of the Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation for the Mayo Clinic.
Learning Objectives
- Summarize the current state of suicide research in youth.
- Interpret findings from a cohort of youth followed from their first suicide attempt coming to medical attention over a period of 25 years.
- Assess the implications of these epidemiological findings fro present management and future work with suicidal youth.
