Mark Frye, MD, is a Professor and Chair Department of Psychiatry and Psychology Mayo Clinic and Director of the Mayo Clinic Depression Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and completed his psychiatric training at the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Institute at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in the Biological Psychiatry Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. While at NIMH, his research focused on the neurobiology of depression and bipolar disorder. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Director of the UCLA Bipolar Disorder Research Program. Dr. Frye’s current research centers on genomics, proteomics, and brain imaging of mood disorders and alcoholism. Dr. Frye and his team established the Mayo Clinic Individualized Medicine Biobank for Bipolar Disorder in an effort to identify and understand the underpinning mechanisms of bipolar disorders through genomic studies. He has received research support from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Mayo Clinic's Samuel C. Johnson Genomics of Addiction Program, and Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine. This work is linked to the Mayo Clinic Depression Center which provides diagnostic consultation for patients with treatment resistant depression and bipolar disorder. He is an active author, publishing more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Frye is active in education. He holds full master’s faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational Sciences at Mayo Graduate School and has provided mentorship to many residents, research fellows and assistant professors. Dr. Frye has received multiple honors and awards both as an educator and researcher, including the Mogens Schou Award for Education from the International Society for Bipolar Disorder, two Mayo Clinic Rome Mentorship Awards and the Gerald Klerman Senior Investigator Award from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. Dr. Frye is an editorial board member of Journal Affective Disorder, Bipolar Disorders, International Journal of Bipolar Disorders and World Journal of Psychiatry.
Second Speaker
J. Michael Bostwick, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Admissions at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. He has published extensively on suicide epidemiology and prevention, medical marijuana, and numerous psychosomatic topics, and serves on editorial boards for two medical journals. He is an avid teacher at all levels of Mayo's medical school and psychiatry residency, and frequently collaborates with trainees on research and writing projects. He holds undergraduate degrees from Yale University and the University of Hawaii in Art History and Zoology respectively. He attended Brown University for medical school, but in the interim between college and medical school was a newspaper reporter for the Cape Cod Times.
