LGBTQ 101: Inclusion in Healthcare
Meredith VandeHaar and Julie Christensen, MD
Speaker 1:Meredith VandeHaar holds a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science from Michigan Technological University, and is currently a graduate student in Bioinformatics studying AI models applied to medical imaging at the University of Minnesota. A cytotechnologist by training, Meredith is one of two embedded Quality Specialists in the Cytopathology laboratory managing their Cytology regulatory compliance program. She moonlights as an LGBTQIA+ advocate in the Mayo community, and serves as the Chair of the Rochester Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Mayo Employee Resource Group. She’s a prolific educator in both the fields of Cytopathology and LGBTQIA+ advocacy and holds the academic rank of Instructor in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.
Speaker 2:
Julie Christensen, M.D. is a General Adult Psychiatry Resident at Mayo Clinic. While completing medical school at Thomas Jefferson University, she led the institution’s LGBTQ student interest group and participated in research with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Gender and Sexuality Development Clinic. Dr. Christensen’s clinical and research interests include a focus on interventions to reduce suicidality in youth.
Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the differences between Sexual Orientation (SO), Gender Identity (GI), and Gender Expression (GE).
- Discuss the health disparities and barriers to inclusive care experienced by the LGBTI+ community.
- Create a safe and inclusive work and care environment for LGBTI+ employees and patients.
- Explain the role of the TISCC, and reflect upon the role of our department, division, or work unit in the care of transgender patients.
- Describe research taking place specific to LGBTI+ health within the Department of Psychiatry & Psychology
