Recent Advances in Noninvasive Brain Stimulation for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders

Paul Croarkin, DO, MS

Dr. Croarkin is a professor of psychiatry in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.  He trained in general psychiatry with the Naval Medical Center San Diego. He then served in the US Navy as a general psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.  Dr. Croarkin returned to training with UT Southwestern Medical Center for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship and a Master’s of Science in Clinical Research. Dr. Croarkin’s research interests span clinical service delivery, biomarker development, and adapting brain stimulation technologies for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. His research is funded by a variety of industry, federal, and foundation grants. In 2017 he received a National Institute of Mental Health Biobehavioral Research Award for Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS) for ongoing work focused on adolescent depression.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Participants will demonstrate a working knowledge of noninvasive brain stimulation modalities and recent research with adolescent patients.
  • Participants will explain the difference among single-pulse, paired-pulse, low frequency, high frequency, and theta burst stimulation.
  • Participants will describe recent research focused on accelerated transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols.
