Pharmacotherapy for Pregnant Women with Bipolar Disorders:  A Clinical Update - William Bobo, MD, MPH

Dr. William Bobo’s research has been supported by NIMH, AHRQ, NSF, the Myocarditis Foundation, and the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Dr. Bobo has contributed chapters to UpToDate that cover the use of medications for treating people with bipolar disorders. At present, there are no medications with regulatory approval for the treatment of bipolar disorders in pregnant women.  As such, all uses or potential uses for the medications discussed in this presentation are considered off-label.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Contrast the fetal and pregnancy-related risks of untreated bipolar disorders with the use of core foundational pharmacotherapies for bipolar disorders during pregnancy.
• Describe the primary limitations of study designs that are often used to quantify such risks.
• Outline basic clinical guidelines for the use of core foundational pharmacotherapies for pregnant women with bipolar disorders.
