Speaker 1:
Joshua Baruth M.D., Ph.D. is a General Psychiatry Resident currently in his 4th year. He is originally from southern Minnesota, and after completing his undergraduate education at the University of Kansas completed both medical school and graduate school at the University of Louisville. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in psychiatry here at the Mayo Clinic. His clinical and research interests are related to the aging population, healthcare disparities, and end-of-life issues. He will be continuing his training as a Mayo Clinic Geriatric Psychiatry Fellow following graduation.

Speaker 2:
Laura Suarez Pardo, M.D. earned her medical degree at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, where she worked as a general practitioner in an underserved community after graduation. She completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program. Subsequently, completed psychiatry residency at Mayo Clinic where she served as chief resident. She is now a Consultation-Liaison Fellow and her clinical interests include cardiovascular and transplant Psychiatry. She has also worked closely with Spanish-speaking population and has developed an interest in Cultural Psychiatry. Dr. Suarez Pardo has received multiple awards for her scholarly, humanitarian, and clinical work. She has focused her research work on understanding psychological distress and mood disorders in patients with heart failure including those who have received an LVAD. Following her fellowship, she will participate in the Clinician Investigator Training Program at Mayo Clinic to continue this same line of research with the end-goal of developing an intervention to decrease morbidity, mortality, and improve care in those with heart failure.

  • identify common healthcare barriers experienced by patients with schizophrenia at the end-of-life.
  • recognize the need for increased awareness and provision of resources in treating this vulnerable population.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify the behavioral and pathophysiological connections between heart failure, depression, and anxiety.
  • recognize how depression and anxiety can negatively impact patients with heart failure.
  • describe literature findings on behavioral and pharmacologic interventions for patients with heart failure.
  • translate the available evidence and its implications into clinical practice and future research.
