The Sleep-Psychiatry Interface in Childhood Hypersomnia Disorders - Suresh Kotagal, MD

Suresh Kotagal, M.D. is a consultant in the Departments of Neurology and Pediatrics, and the Center for Sleep Medicine. He is a professor of Neurology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Kotagal has had a long-standing interest in childhood narcolepsy, and its diagnosis and treatment. He started the pediatric component of the Mayo Clinic sleep center in 2000. He serves on the hypersomnia treatment task force of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Kotagal has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial boards of Sleep Medicine and the Journal of Child Neurology.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Cite the prevalence of hypersomnolence in children and adolescents
  • Assess excessive sleepiness in children and adolescents
  • Recognize how certain drugs might interfere with sleep laboratory assessment and how we can reconsider management approaches
