Pediatric Neuropsychology:  Then and Now
Dana McCall, Ph.D.

Dr. McCall is the second year Pediatric Neuropsychology Fellow and she enjoys working with a wide range of patient populations, including children with epilepsy, brain injury, and autism. Her research interests are focused on the cognitive and psychological development of children with neurodevelopmental conditions and risk factors. She is currently involved in projects describing the referral patterns to the Pediatric Neuropsychology practice, improving the utility of a clinical database, and investigating psychological outcomes following traumatic brain injury.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • State the changes in pediatric neuropsychology referral patterns over the last 25 years.
  • Differentiate between concerns that warrant a pediatric neuropsychological evaluation versus an educational evaluation.
  • Summarize the main characteristics associated with Alexander Disease based on the case series that was presented.

Wrist Fractures and Risk of Incident Neurocognitive Decline in Older Adults:  A Retrospective Cohort Study
Joshua Baruth, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Baruth is a geriatric Psychiatry Fellow and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He is originally from southern Minnesota, and after completing his undergraduate education at the University of Kansas completed both medical school and graduate school at the University of Louisville. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Baruth’s clinical and research interests are related to the aging population, healthcare disparities, and end-of-life issues.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the relationship between wrist fractures and both physical and neurocognitive decline in older adults.
  • State how wrist fractures may be an early indicator for future cognitive decline.
  • Recognize wrist fractures as a potential sentinel opportunity for addressing modifiable risk factors of neurocognitive decline.
