Child and Parent Beliefs about Exposure Therapy for Anxious Youth

Elle Brennan, Ph.D., is a Child and Adolescent/Pediatric Postdoctoral Fellow within the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medical Education. Before coming to Mayo, she completed her masters and doctorate at Kent State University in Ohio, as well as a yearlong clinical internship at the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital in Illinois. Dr. Brennan’s clinical and research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and adolescents, as well as the environmental factors (e.g., parenting) that impact these diagnoses.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe the basic mechanism underlying exposure therapy for anxiety disorders in youth.
• Identify the barriers to access of exposure therapy that many families face.
• Recognize the impact that child and parent beliefs about exposure therapy might have on treatment.
