The Importance of Educating Psychiatry Trainees on Black Mental Health
Whitney Evans, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Evans is a PGY4 Psychiatry resident at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She is originally from Nashville, TN and after completing her undergraduate education at Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL she completed both medical school and graduate school at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. Dr. Evans’ clinical interests include working with substance use populations and healthcare disparities.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the importance of incorporating Black Mental Health in Psychiatry training as part of culturally competent care.
  • Understand the population being treated, their historical background as it relates to mental health, and how this background impacts treatment.
  • Learn ways to incorporate this historical context into Psychiatry training in order to inform diagnostic formulation and patient care.

Service and Emotional Support Animals:  What Mental Health Professionals Should Know

Amanda Benarroch, M.D.

Dr. Benarroch received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota, graduating summa cum laude with a major in psychology and minors in child psychology and Spanish.  She completed medical school at the University of Minnesota and was elected to the Gold Humanism Honors Society.  A Rochester, MN native, she returned for her psychiatry residency training here at Mayo Clinic.  Her interests include resident and patient education, physician well-being, and effective communication in healthcare.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define and differentiate therapy, service and emotional and support animals.
  • Identify rights pertaining to these animals across various settings.
  • Know required elements of an emotional support animal letter and recognize appropriate considerations in drafting such letters.
