What is a D.O. Anyway?  Historical Perspectives of Osteopathic Medicine and Their Relation to the Practice of Psychiatry
Eric Pease, D.O., M.B.A.

Dr. Eric Pease is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellow and Instructor in Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Pease earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in neuroscience from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where he completed a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Leadership from Rockhurst University while concurrently attending medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Pease began his graduate medical education as a General Psychiatry resident at Mayo Clinic before transitioning to his current role. His areas of interest include quality improvement, healthcare finance, as well as medical student and resident education.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize key events leading to the development of osteopathic medicine.
  • Identify the foundational principles of osteopathic medicine.
  • Compare similarities and differences between osteopathic and allopathic medical education and philosophies.
  • Review the practice of osteopathic medicine, both historically and present day and understand the relationship of osteopathic principles to the practice of psychiatry.

The State of Black Psychiatry & Psychology:  A Call to Equity-Oriented Practice and Research

Tyson Pankey, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Tyson Pankey, PhD, MPH is a clinical health psychology fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. On fellowship, he has a dual emphasis in family medicine residency education and transgender health. He completed his undergraduate degrees at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and his Master’s in Public Health degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine & Public Health. He completed his doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a clinician and researcher, Dr. Pankey is dedicated to addressing health disparities among minoritized populations, including racial/ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ patients and healthcare providers

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review current racial inequities in psychiatry and psychology among Black patients and providers.
  • Describe structural contributors to racial inequity among Black patients and providers in psychiatry and psychology.
  • Illustrate strategies that promote the advancement of the Black professorate in psychiatry and psychology.
