Influence of Ethnic and Cultural Factors on the Clinical Presentation of Bipolar Disorders in Latin America
Manuel Gardea Reséndez, M.D.

Dr. Manuel Gardea Reséndez is a Mood fellow at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He earned his Medical Doctor degree at Tecnológico de Monterrey and completed his Psychiatry training at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, both located in Monterrey (Mexico). Dr. Gardea-Reséndez has interest in mental health equity, including affordable interventions for mood disorders in low- and middle-income settings. His research areas of interest also include the onset and clinical trajectory of bipolar disorder and epigenetic influences on mood disorders.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the challenges of mental health in Latin America and Hispanic/Latino patients.
  • Describe the evidence on ethnic group differences in depressive and bipolar symptomology in Hispanic patients.
  • Illustrate the clinical and demographic differences between individuals of Hispanic and European ancestry from the Bipolar Biobank.

Psychopharmacology in Bariatric Surgery Patients

David Fipps, D.O.

Dr. David Fipps is a consultation liaison psychiatry fellow at Mayo clinic.  He graduated summa cum laude from Southern Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry.  He completed his medical school training at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida and his adult psychiatry residency at the University of South Carolina, Greenville.   Dr. Fipps’s clinical and research interests include bariatric surgery psychiatry as well as transplant psychiatry. These interests have led to multiple publications and national conference presentations for both psychiatry and bariatric surgery.  During residency, he received his psychiatry residency’s research award two consecutive years and received the Prisma health house staff research award in his 4th year, which is the highest research award given amongst all the residencies and fellowships in that hospital system.  He has also received the National Alliance on Mental Illness Professional Student Award as well the William Webb Fellowship via the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, which is the highest trainee award given by ACLP.  He has served on both the fellowship and residency education subcommittees of ACLP and has a passion for teaching residents and medical students.   He has been actively involved in multiple manuscripts and projects during his fellowship with collaborations in integrated behavioral health, neurology, bariatric surgery, transplant surgery, and neurosurgery.  Outside of work Dr. Fipps holds a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo and enjoys spending time with his family.

  • Describe the pharmacokinetic changes that occur after the different types of bariatric surgery.
  • Translate the pharmacokinetic changes into clinically relevant action steps.
  • Identify when to incorporate the action steps with post-surgical patients.
