Predicting the Severity of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome:  PAWSS, a simple and useful screening tool
Victor Nettey, M.D., Ch.B., M.P.H.

Dr. Nettey is an addiction psychiatry fellow at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He completed his medical school at the University of Ghana Medical School in Ghana, West Africa. He obtained a Master’s in Public Health degree with concentration in health policy and management at the East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN and general psychiatry residency training at the Harlem Hospital Center an Affiliate of Columbia University in New York City, NY. He is interested in both substance and behavioral addictions, particularly the neurobiology of addiction.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • State the physiological basis of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
  • Summarize the management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
  • Summarize the research on the "Prediction of Alcohol Withdrawal Severity Scale" (PAWSS) screening tool.

Mayo Normative Studies:  amyloid and neurodegeneration negative (A-N-) Auditory Verbal Learning Test normative data and preliminary validation

Shehroo Pudumjee, Ph.D.

Dr. Shehroo Pudumjee is a second year, clinical neuropsychology fellow. Her clinical interests include working with individuals with mild cognitive impairment/dementia and movement disorders. Broadly, she is interested in improving access to care for neuropsychological evaluations and improving the efficacy of assessment measures and processes. Dr. Pudumjee’s current research focuses on early detection of cognitive decline in those with and at risk for Alzheimer’s disease as well as examining the use of biomarker based normative data in improving diagnostic precision. She is also currently working on projects delineating changes in cognition across neurodegenerative speech and language disorders.  Dr. Pudumjee is also examining the contribution of specific neuropsychological measures to the diagnosis of atypical Alzheimer’s disease.

  • State the importance of accounting for various demographic variables when using normative data.
  • Recognize the importance of exclusion criteria in normative data.
  • Integrate knowledge of biomarker status in cognitive decline.
