Gender-Affirming Care:  Takeaways for Psychosocial Providers
Cesar Gonzalez, Ph.D., L.P., Dagoberto Heredia, Ph.D., L.P., Jennifer Vencill, Ph.D., L.P.

Cesar A. Gonzalez, PhD, LP, ABPP (he/they) is an assistant professor of psychology and family medicine; he is board-certified in clinical psychology. He serves as the clinical director of Mayo Clinic’s Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic and as an associate program director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. Previous to Mayo Clinic, Dr. Gonzalez was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota’s Program in Human Sexuality. In 2010, he completed a two-year fellowship in research and clinical fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He specialized in transgender health, relationship and sex therapy, and treating problematic sexual behaviors. Dr. Gonzalez has worked with sexual and gender diverse sexual communities since 2003. He holds advanced certification in schema therapy and is a certified trainer-supervisor in schema therapy by the International Society of Schema Therapy.

Dagoberto Heredia Jr., Ph.D., L.P. (he/him) is a gay, cisgender man of Mexican origin. He is a Licensed Psychologist and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Mayo Clinic's College of Medicine and Science. His primary clinical appointments are in the Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic and the Adult Transitions Program. His research expands community-engaged approaches for designing, delivering, and evaluating LGBTQ-affirmative interventions in specialty medical settings (e.g., endocrinology, psychiatry, primary care). In 2019, he founded Mayo Clinic’s first gender health focused Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to ensure that trans and non-binary perspectives are integrated into the gender clinic’s care practices. He has served as co-chair of NLPA’s Orgullo Latinx: Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity special interest group since 2014,

Dr. Jennifer Vencill, Ph.D., L.P. (she/her/hers) is a licensed psychologist and AASECT certified sex therapist. She is dually appointed in Mayo Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, as well as General Internal Medicine, where she spends the bulk of her time providing integrated sexual health care in the Menopause and Women’s Sexual Health Clinic. Dr. Vencill’s research focuses on sexual health, health disparities and minority stress in marginalized sexual and gender communities, and mixed orientation relationships. She sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Sexual Health and is past president of the Society for the Psychology of Women’s Section on Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns. Dr. Vencill received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech University and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Program in Human Sexuality.
