Risk and Therapeutic Potential of Cannabis:  Conundrum in a Pot
Pravesh Sharma, MD

Dr. Pravesh Sharma is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic Health System, Eau Claire. His area of research is substance use disorder among adolescent and young adults- more specifically, cannabinoid, vaping products, and tobacco use. He has published widely in this field and currently holds research funding from Mayo Clinic Health System to study the effects of these substances. He is a committee member of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Committee of Department of Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic. He also holds interests in understanding the barriers to digitally inclusive health care among rural and racially diverse population, and was awarded Eradicate Racism Funding by Mayo Clinic Clinical Practice Committee to understand the barriers to use of telehealth during COVID-19. He serves as a committee member of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Systems of Care Committee for the past many years and has contributed to their media/press releases and development of clinical modules for education of clinicians about utilization of systems of care approach in the psychiatric and substance use treatment of youth from diverse backgrounds.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the putative molecular and neurobiological mechanisms of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Educate patients and families regarding the current state of evidence in relation to therapeutic potential and risks of THC and CBD use.
  • Summarize the various legal and regulatory guidelines surrounding THC and CBD.
