Can an Antiracist Agenda in Organized Medicine Increase Health Equity?
Cheryl Wills, M.D., DFAPA, ACP

Cheryl D. Wills, M.D., DFAPA, ACP is Director of Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatric Services at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University.  She earned a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, Columbia University, and the MD degree from the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. She completed a combined residency in general and child psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry with a concentration in child forensic psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Wills serves on the APA Board of Trustees and chaired its APA Presidential Task Force on Structural Racism.  She has coauthored treatment guidelines with the APA Guideline Writing Group. She is actively involved in the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Her publications focus on forensic and clinical aspects of psychiatric practice.

Dr. Wills teaches locally and nationally on matters pertaining to mental health and law. Her skillset makes her an effective advocate the profession and an effective consultant to healthcare professionals, businesses, attorneys, medical boards, and legislators. Her interests include community, occupational, correctional, and administrative psychiatry.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between structural racism, health disparities and medical morbidity and morality.
  • Examine how organized medicine is addressing structural racism.
  • Describe how cultural humility can enhance health equity.
