The Art of Sleep
Mark Hansen, MD

Mark Hansen studied theater, philosophy, and medicine at the University of Wisconsin before coming to the Mayo Clinic as a psychiatry resident in 1978.  He was appointed to the staff four years later; and he subsequently has held a number of positions here, including Director of the Intensive Psychotherapy Center, Head of the Outpatient Addiction Service, Director of Psychiatric Residency Training, Chair of the Division of Adult Psychiatry, and Vice Chair for Practice in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology.  In 1991, Dr. Hansen became the 353rd physician to be board certified in the new specialty of Sleep Medicine; and he has increasingly focused his practice in this area in the years since.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe three theories regarding the basic function of sleep.
  • Discuss the risks of treating and not treating insomnia
  • Recognize limitations of evidence-based practice and the need, for now, of clinicians well versed in the art of medicine.
