Becoming Aware of White Talk Moves:  Making your Workplace More Inclusive
Margaret Finders, PhD, and Terrance Kwame-Ross, PhD

With a focus on race, predominantly White organizations struggle to do better. Yet missing from most of these discussions is a focus on Whiteness. In this session we engage participants to “see” the ways seemingly common-sense talk hold Whiteness as central. Whiteness is often taken for granted, one that is not in need of further analysis. Yet with no further analysis, there is no opportunity for disruption and thus, no possible transformation of traditionally White dominated spaces. White people tend to silence the voices of people of color, often without realizing it. These "white talk moves" suppress important perspectives and voices and prevent meaningful inclusion. In this interactive lecture, participants will learn to identify White Talk Moves.  We will focus on how to engage in these situations explicitly and productively at the moment of utterance whether you identify as white or a BIPOC. We are excited to engage our community, and others, in these real, radical, and relational conversations.

Margaret J. Finders, Ph.D., former Chair and Professor, Department of Education, Augsburg University, Minneapolis, MN, has written books and numerous articles on teaching and learning with a focus on diversity and equity. Her research and teaching interests center on early adolescence and sociocultural dimensions of learning within and beyond the school context.  Her recent areas of inquiry are on equity and democratic practices for teacher education and higher education.

Terrance Kwame-Ross, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Education Department, Augsburg University. Terrance also holds a Visiting Faculty-Lecturer appointment, in the School of Social Work, Youth Development Leadership (YDL) Graduate Program, University of Minnesota.  Dr. Kwame-Ross's scholarship and research focus on learning as a socio-cultural process and how humans grow, develop and change overtime. He's particularly interested in how unchecked dominant White normative beliefs, values, knowledge and ways of being impact and influence individual and social group development.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Assess self-participation to productively engage in discussions.
  • Define talk moves that silence BIPOC members of the community.
  • Analyze talk moves at the moment of utterance.
