Bridging Mental Health Gaps in Chaplain Trainees: A Curriculum Development Adventure

Sawyer Berrett, DO

Introduction

Sawyer Hamilton Berrett, DO is a second-year fellow of child and adolescent psychiatry at Mayo Clinic - Rochester. His interest in child psychiatry sprouted as a freshman in college. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. During those years he juggled academics with wilderness therapy and other opportunities to work with behavioral children and adolescents. Upon completion of his undergraduate education, he worked full-time on the child psychiatric unit of the Utah State Hospital providing direct patient care. After this, he attended and graduated Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and matched into the psychiatry residency at Mayo Clinic - Rochester.  During residency Sawyer volunteered for teaching roles with medical students, peers, and chaplain trainees. These experiences led him to join the clinical educator track where he developed curricula for chaplains and psychiatry residents on the intersections of mental health and spirituality / religion. His interests include medical student/resident education, descriptive psychiatry, developmental disorders, ADHD, theology, science fiction, rock climbing, and astronomy.
