Session date:
08/24/2021 - 12:10pm to 1:10pm

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a neuropathological diagnosis that can only be confirmed on autopsy. Dr. Wethe will provide a brief history of CTE and the surrounding controversies. Research related to CTE will be discussed with special emphasis on the DIAGNOSE-CTE project (NINDS U01-PI: R. Stern), which seeks to develop criteria for diagnosing CTE in the living.

Earlier this year, new NINDS consensus research diagnostic criteria for Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome (TES), the clinical manifestation of CTE, were published (Katz et al, 2021). The expert consensus workshop and Delphi process utilized to arrive at the new diagnostic criteria will be described. The new TES research diagnostic criteria and their application will be described in detail. Strengths and weaknesses of the criteria as well as their appropriate application will be discussed.
