Mayo Clinic speech pathologists work in close collaboration with multiple departments to complete comprehensive evaluations of complex dysphagia patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. The Dysphagia Evaluation and Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Model course is unique and shares with learners Mayo’s holistic approach on how to diagnose and manage this complex patient. It is designed with intermediate to advanced content for the professional in speech and language pathology, radiology, ENT, neurology, and gastroenterology.

Target Audience

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) course is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their skills in evaluating and managing complex dysphagia cases in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The course provides a holistic approach, integrating the latest evidence-based practices and interdisciplinary strategies to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify clinical indicators that warrant referral to other specialties (e.g., neurology, gastroenterology, radiology) to ensure accurate diagnosis and comprehensive management of swallowing disorders.
  • Examine evidence-based approaches for assessing dysphagia in diverse patient populations, incorporating interdisciplinary collaboration and diagnostic technologies.
  • Evaluate a range of intervention options—including rehabilitative exercises, dietary modifications, pharmacologic treatments, and surgical procedures—and apply decision-making frameworks to tailor care based on etiology and patient-specific factors.

Faculty MemberBiography
Timothy R. Aksamit, M.D.Dr. Timothy Aksamit received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois; medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois; and medical training in internal medicine as well as pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City where he was also chief resident. Additional research was completed at Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK. Prior to joinnig the staff at Mayo Clinic in 1998 he was in private practice in Madison Wisconsin. He was a co-founding member of and previously served as chair of the United States Bronchiectasis and NTM Research Registry. He currently is medical director of the Bronchiectasis and NTM Research Registry. He currently is medical director of the Bronchiectasis and NTM Association and co-chair of the World Bronchiectasis Day. He has also served previously as director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Other positions previously held include chair of the State of Minnesota Tuberculous Advisory Committee, medical director of the Olmsted County Public Health Department- Mayo Clinic Tuberculosis Clinic, director of the Mayo Mycobacterial and Bronchiectasis Clinic, and medical director of chaplain services Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. 
Semirra L. Bayan, M.D.Dr. Semirra (Sami) Bayan is a Laryngeal Surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She completed her medical school at the University of Virgina and her Otolaryngology surgical residency at the University of Iowa. She completed her fellowship in Laryngeal Surgery at Massachusetts General Voice Center in Boston. She is currently the Associate Program Director of the Mayo Clinic Rochester residency training program. Her clinical interests include medical education and optimization of patient care. 
Claudia Z. Chou, M.D.Claudia Chou, MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and a Palliative Care Consultant in the Division of Community Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care (CIMGP) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her residency in Neurology and fellowship in Movement Disorders at Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) at the Ohio State University. Currently, she serves as program director for the HPM fellowship at Mayo in Rochester. Her interests are developing models of palliative care delivery in neurology and education about palliative care for patients with neurologic disease.  
Heather M. Cark, Ph.D. Dr. Heather Clark is Professor of Speech Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech- Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease. Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program and conference chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association. 
Chamil C. Codipilly, M.D.Dr. D. Chamil Codipilly, M.D. is a board-certified Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has research and clinical focus on esophageal disease, particularly the identification of risk factors for diagnosis of, as well as management of, Barrett's esophagus and early stage esophageal cancer. He also has clinical interests in benign esophageal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, and eosinophilic esophagitis. Dr. Codipilly obtained his medical degree from the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He then completed internal medicine residency training and gastroenterology & hepatology fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester). He subsequently completed a year of advanced esophageal diseases fellowship prior to joining the division.  
Nathan W. Cummins, M.D. Dr. Nathan Cummins is a Transplant Infectious Disease Specialist at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He also serves as an Associate Clinical Ethicist on the Clinical Ethics Consult service, is a member of the Rochester Clinical Ethics Committee, and serves as the medical director of the Transplant Ethics Advisory Board in Rochester. 
Kristina T. Flicek, M.D.Kristina Flicek, MD is a physician in the Abdominal Radiology Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is a(n) Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine. She graduated medical school from the University of Arizona and completed diagnostic radiology residency at Creighton University in Phoenix, AZ. Additionally she completed a Body Imaging Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Clinical interests include abdominal imaging using fluoroscopy, CT and MRI.   
Brett A. Freedman, M.D. Rachael Dr. Brett A. Freedman graduated from Vanderbilt University ('95), University of Illinois College of Medicine ('00), Walter Reed Orthopedic Surgery Residency ('06) prior to deploying to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) with the US Army, where he earned the Bronze Star Medal. Then completed the Emory University Spine Fellowship ('08). Upon completion of his training, COL (Ret.) Freedman was stationed in Landstuhl/Ramstein, Germany, where he served as a Section Chair, then Department Chair and ultimately acting Division Chair at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the only ACS accredited Level 1 trauma center outside of the US. In 2015, he left active service in the US Army and started at Mayo Clinic, where he now serves as Chair of the Division of Spine Surgery. His research interests include bone health optimization, spinal arthroplasty and spinal implant innovation. He is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in spine surgery with over 250 publications, who has presented his research across the globe. He also is a dedicated educator, currently serving as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Chair of the AO Spine North America Foundation Fellowship Committee. 
Rachael M. Guenzel, APRN, C.N.P., D.N.P.Rachael Guenzel is a Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Radiation Oncology who specializes in head and neck and hematological malignancies at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  She is also a Mayo Clinic Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology.  She enjoys precepting students and new employees. In collaboration with her colleagues, she serves as a program director for the Global Bridges Oncology Nursing Seminar, which facilitates bi-directional learning with oncology providers in Africa. She also enjoys research and has led a quality improvement project to improve PM&R referral rates for head and neck cancer patients to improve patient outcomes. 
Emily A. Hosfield, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-SEmily Hosfield is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is an Instructor in the College of Medicine and a board-certified swallowing specialist (BCS-S). Her clinical and research interests focus on the evaluation and management of adult and pediatric dysphagia. 
Anne E. Kulinski, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-SAnne Kulinski, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Anne is an instructor in the College of Medicine and serves as the acute dysphagia lead clinician. She earned her master’s degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. Clinical interests include evaluating and treating dysphagia in adult populations and promoting interdisciplinary care for patients with dysphagia.  
Julia K. Meverden, M.S., CCC-SLPJulia Meverden, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic Rochester in Rochester, MN. She is the assistant supervisor of the division of speech pathology and an Instructor in Neurology. Julia has a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology and her clinical interests include dysphagia evaluation and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient setting. 
Avinash K. Nehra, M.D.Avinash Nehra, M.D. is a Consultant in the Department of Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Nehra is an Assistant Professor of Radiology in the College of Medicine. Dr. Nehra has a Bachelor of Science and completed medical school from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Nehra works in the Abdominal and Hospital/Emergency Medicine Divisions of Radiology and clinical interests include imaging of gastrointestinal disorders as well as photon-counting CT.  
Elizabeth M. Olsen, APRN, C.N.P., M.S.N.Elizabeth Olsen, APRN, CNP is a Nurse Practitioner in the Heart and Lung Transplant/ Cardiovascular Surgery Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Elizabeth is a(n) Instructor in Surgery in the College of Medicine. She has a Master of Science in Nursing and a degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Bradley University.  Elizabeth is currently the supervisor for the heart/lung transplant APP group under the CV Surgery division.  She is an active committee member for the transplant clinical practice committee.  She also serves on as a member of the Transplant Committee in the Association of Pulmonary Advanced Practice Providers (APAPP).  Clinical interests include a passion for educating others about heart and lung transplant patients and their unique needs.   
Kiersten A. Pope, M.S., CCC-SLPKiersten Pope, MS, CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist at Saint Marys Hospital campus of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Kiersten has a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Utah State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Brigham Young University. She completed a clinical fellowship with the Speech Language Pathology team at Mayo Clinic from 2019-2020. Her clinical interests include communication and swallow rehabilitation with adults with acquired brain injuries including stroke, TBI, and post-neurosurgery. 
Amy Scibona, M.S., CCC-SLPAmy is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Division of Speech-Language Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She has a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Fontbonne University in St. Louis. She evaluates and treats dysphagia in the acute and outpatient practices, with a special interest in head and neck cancer and critical care dysphagia management. 
Catherine A. Shonley, M.A., CCC-SLPCatherine A. Shonley, MA, CCC-SLP, is an Allied Health Speech-Language Pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She earned her BA in communication sciences and disorders from Northwestern University followed by her MA in speech-language-hearing sciences from The University of Minnesota. She works primarily with adults in the inpatient and outpatient settings with a focus on assessing and treating dysphagia arising from neurologic injury and illness, head and neck cancer, and other etiologies.   
Jill Snuggerud, M.S., L.P. Jill has worked in the Behavioral Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester for 38 years and has been licensed as a master's level psychologist for 21 years. The Behavioral Medicine Program works closely with multidisciplinary medical and surgical teams to address the psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of patient's symptoms. Many patients have seen a number of medical specialists, but fewer have seen a psychological clinician to address these factors, and thus this work can contribute to patients understanding, improvement, and satisfaction when seeking medical care. 
Eric J. Sorenson, M.D.Dr. Eric Sorenson is a neuromuscular physician in the department of neurology at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. Dr. Sorenson is a Professor of Neurology in the College of Medicine. He received his MD from Mayo Medical School and then completed his residency in Neurology at Mayo Rochester.  He completed his neuromuscular fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI.   His clinical and research interests include electromyography and the neuromuscular diseases with a focus on the diagnosis, epidemiology and treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. 
Ryan D. Stewart, PA-C., M.S. 

Ryan Stewart, PA-C is a Physician Assistant in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Ryan is an instructor in the College of Medicine. Ryan manages a full spectrum of common ENT conditions, including tinnitus, hearing loss, otitis media, sinusitis, hoarseness, and dysphagia. He also practices subspecialty otology with a focus on the diagnosis and longitudinal management of skull base tumors- such as vestibular schwannomas-as well as cholesteatomas and patients undergoing cochlear implantation. 

Derek W. Stitt, M.D. Dr. Derek Stitt is a Consultant and Assistant Professor in the Mayo Clinic Department Neurology Division of Education. His primary focus is on clinical education with additional interest in neurotoxicology. He has served as the attending physician on the general neurology hospital service for 12 weeks per year for the last 6 years. He originated in Kentucky until moving to Rochester for neurology residency training at Mayo.

Wakeman, M.A., CCC-SLPNicole Wakeman, M.A., CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She has a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Northern Iowa. Clinical interests include dysphagia management in the critical care setting, disorders of consciousness, and staff education and training on supported conversation techniques for aphasia.  
Linda X. Yin, M.D. 

Dr. Linda Yin, is a head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstruction surgeon at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Her clinical interests lie in transoral robot surgery and de-escalation of adjuvant radiation after surgery, as well as neoadjuvant systemic therapy for oral cavity cancer and innovative approaches to free flap reconstruction. Dr. Yin received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she spent an extra year doing translational research under a Dean's Year of Research award and graduated at the top of her class with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She completed her residency training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and pursued an additional year of advanced training in head and neck oncologic surgery and microvascular reconstruction at the University of Michigan. Dr.
