2016 Writing for Biomedical Publication, CCaTS Annual Workshop

The Center for Translational Science Activities (CTSA) is offering a day-long seminar for investigators and other research team members, "Writing for Biomedical Publications." The workshop focuses on tips for successful placement of original research manuscripts in biomedical journals and will be taught by Dr. Christopher (Chris) Papasian.

The workshop will be held Friday, March 11, 2016, in-person in Rochester, and via live videoconference to the Scottsdale and Jacksonville campuses.

Learn how to write for journals and navigate the publishing world:

  • Understand the four key elements required in preparing and publishing high-quality manuscripts in the biomedical field.
  • Know what factors to consider in the selection of target journals for submission of their manuscripts.
  • Appreciate the complex interactive and interdependent role that authors, editors, and reviewers play in the publication process.
  • Apply critical tests to determine who should and shouldn’t be included as co-authors on manuscripts submitted for publication.
  • Create charts, tables, and figures that communicate information in the results section of a manuscript.
  • Develop an appropriate cover letter and complete submission forms in submitting manuscripts.
  • Understand the various legal and ethical issues involved with publication of manuscripts, (copyright, conflict of interest, financial disclosure).
  • Respond to critiques of reviewed manuscripts provided by reviewers in preparation for resubmission of a manuscript.
  • Understand exactly what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

 

Materials

At the workshop, participants will receive a copy of “Writing for Biomedical Publication,” which features a step-by-step method for writing a biomedical manuscript and focuses on issues that arise throughout the publishing process.

Designed for anyone who is interested in publishing (consultants, allied health staff, nurses).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this CME activity, participants should be able to :

  • Compose an Abstract that efficiently communicates all key new findings from their study.
  • Construct an Introductory Section that provides a conceptual justification for the research reported in the manuscript.
  • Construct a Results Section that clearly communicates the rationale for performing each experiment, the data generated from those experiments, and the interpretation of those results.
  • Compose a Discussion Section that efficiently communicates the major conclusions of the manuscript, the evidence leading to those conclusions, and the significance of these new findings to their field.
  • Distinguish references that should be cited in their manuscript from those that should not be cited.
  • Select an appropriate journal for their manuscript submission based on scope, acceptance rates, impact factor, and accessibility.
  • Formulate an informed strategy regarding who should and should not be included as authors on the manuscripts they coauthor.
  • Prepared to interact more effectively with Reviewers and Editors, as their manuscript is reviewed.

The presentor is Dr. Christopher (Chris) Papasian. Dr. Papasian has served on Editorial Boards for journals published by the American Society for Microbiology continuously since 1996, and currently serves as an Editor for 'Clinical and Vaccine Immunology'. He is coauthor of 12 book chapters and over 120 peer reviewed publications, and is also co-author of the GWSW textbook entitled "Writing for Biomedical Publication".

Dr. Papasian is a Professor of Basic Medical Science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, School of Medicine, and has served as Chair of that Department since 1998
