This course is a one day educational activity designed for nurses involved in the management of patients with TB, supervise those who provide care for TB patients, or are TB control staff.  The course will focus on the basics of TB diagnosis, treatment of latent TB infection and treatment of TB disease and the role of public health nurses in TB case management as well as cultural competence.

Jointly provided by Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development and Mayo Continuing Nursing Education.

This course is planned in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Public Health.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Identify recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of TB.
  • Identify appropriate TB, HIV and Hepatitis C infection control measures along the continuum of care to prevent transmission and future cases.
  • Describe approaches for managing adverse drug effects of medications to minimize toxicity and ensure completion of therapy.
  • Identify how primary care providers and community agencies can collaborate to prevent missed opportunities in the diagnosis and treatment of TB.
  • Describe the role of the Public Health nurse in the diagnosis and treatment of TB.
  • Identify the fundamentals of nursing case management
