PRESENTER(S)
Iftikhar J. Kullo, MD

PRESENTER BIO
Professor, College of Medicine
Consultant, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine
Director of the Cardio Genomics Clinic

Dr. Kullo's laboratory conducts clinical trials in genomic medicine, such as the recently concluded Myocardioal Infarction Genes (MI-GENES) study, which assessed the effect on LDL cholesterol of disclosing a genetic risk score for coronary heart disease based on 28 susceptibility variants. The main focus of Dr. Kullo's laboratory is to improve the ability to predict adverse cardiovascular events in asymptomatic individuals using genetic susceptibility markers, circulating biomarkers and measurements of arterial function.

Dr. Iftikhar J. Kullo is a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine, including the Clinician Investigator training pathway and subsequently a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Kullo has authored 248 scientific papers, and he is the co-Principal Investigator of the Mayo electronic Medical Records and GEnomics (eMERGE) grant.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:
  • Explain practical applications of genomics and pharmacogenomics for individualizing patient care.
  • Define strategies to overcome obstacles to implementing genomic sequencing for patient care.
  • Describe new and emerging technologies that promote individualized care for patients.
  • Discuss ethical, legal, and social issues arising from the translation of individualized medicine into the clinical practice and the promotion of molecular, cellular, and genomic medicine research.

ATTENDANCE / CREDIT
Text the session code (provided only at the session) to 507-200-3010 within 48 hours of the live presentation to record attendance. All learners are encouraged to text attendance regardless of credit needs. This number is only used for receiving text messages related to tracking attendance. Additional tasks to obtain credit may be required based on the specific activity requirements and will be announced accordingly.
