Wesley L. Allen, M.D.

This week long course provides anesthesiologists and perioperative clinicians with evidence-based updates in anesthetic techniques, perioperative management, regional anesthesia, neuromonitoring, patient safety, and critical care. Topics include emerging technologies, high-risk patient populations, quality improvement, leadership, and innovations shaping modern anesthesiology practice.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians involved in the perioperative care of patients including anesthesiologists, surgeons, internists, pediatricians, neurologists, radiologists, and emergency medicine physicians.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate current and emerging anesthetic techniques and perioperative management strategies for complex surgical, neurointerventional, cardiac, robotic, transplant, and ambulatory procedures.
  • Apply evidence-based approaches to perioperative risk assessment, cardiovascular optimization, anemia management, fluid responsiveness assessment, airway management, and management of perioperative shock and abdominal compartment syndrome.
  • Integrate advances in neuromonitoring, regional anesthesia, point-of-care ultrasound, intra-cardiac echocardiography, and image-guided technologies to improve patient safety and perioperative outcomes.
  • Assess the impact of evolving technologies, genomics, additive manufacturing, machine perfusion, and novel anesthetic agents on anesthesiology practice and patient-centered care.
  • Identify best practices for managing high-risk and specialized patient populations, including pregnant patients, patients with obesity, malignant hyperthermia susceptibility, ALS, high-altitude illness, and post-cardiac surgery neurocognitive disorders.
  • Examine strategies to improve quality, professionalism, communication, civility, leadership, and systems-based practice within perioperative and hospital environments.
